At Christ the King, we believe in nurturing not just academic excellence but also a sense of responsibility and compassion in our students. One of the most impactful ways we achieve this is through our community service program. This initiative encourages students to engage with and contribute to the broader community.
Engaging in community service provides numerous benefits to our students, including:
Enhanced Social Skills
Real World Experience
Personal Growth
Community Impact
Service hours are a tangible reflection of our students' commitment to making a difference. Each hour spent volunteering contributes not only to the betterment of our community but also to the personal growth of our students.
This year, we will again be celebrating those students that complete their Service Hours at the End of Year Prizegiving.
We have 3 different awards
Bronze = 5 - 9 hrs of service
Silver = 10 - 14 hrs of service
Gold = 15+ hrs of service.
Service booklets will be sent home next week and are Due in on November 1st 2024.

Gratitude brings happiness
“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.”
Proverb
Gratitude in all forms is associated with happiness. Whether we say “thank you to someone or receive the same from others, the feeling it brings is that of pure satisfaction and encouragement. Expressions of gratitude help in building and sustaining long term relationships, deal with adversities and bounce back from them with strength and motivation.
Gratitude improves interpersonal relationships at home and work. The connection between gratitude and happiness is multi-dimensional. Expressing gratitude not only to others but also to ourselves, induces positive emotions, primarily happiness. By producing feelings of pleasure and contentment, gratitude impacts on our overall health and wellbeing as well.
Simple practices like maintaining a gratitude journal, complimenting the self, or sending small tokens and thank you notes can make us feel a lot better and enhance our mood immediately. Couple studies have also indicated that partners who expressed their thankfulness to each other often, could sustain their relationships with mutual trust, loyalty, and had long-lasting happy relationships.
“It is not happiness that brings us gratitude. It is gratitude that brings us happiness.” “God gave you a gift of 86400 seconds today. Have you used one to say thank you?”

Tēnā koutou katoa.
This week reminds us that we are not only halfway through term 2, but we are also halfway through 2024!
Here are some learning websites that you can explore with your child/children at home or can be used for extra homework as well.
Last week our students took part over the week in fun and active activities for Samoan Language Week.
Some Year 3-6 students were chosen to represent their houses in a Lape tournament. Lape is a fun game played in Samoa. It is similar to softball, but using a round ball. You use your body instead of a bat. This game is a great way to develop teamwork and skills, and a way to enjoy an active and fun piece of Samoan culture. Despite the rain last week, it did not stop the fun our students had participating in this Samoan game. There was great encouragement from all the students who came to watch as well!
Fa’afetai lava to Mr Davids for organising the fun activities throughout Samoan Language week.
Pacific Kids Learning
This week there have been some wonderful learning experiences for our tamariki at CTK. On Tuesday the Pacific Kids Learning (PKL) team worked alongside our room 8 students throughout the day to build their knowledge, skills and creativity using animation. The PKL educators are a team of creatives who produce engaging ‘edu-tainment’ animations using a variety of techniques such as 2D, 3D stop motion, motion capture and virtual reality. The PKL team will be using a selection of four Māori myths and legends such as ‘How the Kiwi lost his wings’, ‘Maui and Tieke’, ‘Rata me te Rakau’, and ‘The myth of Kupe and Te Wheke’. Each of these stories were retold, rewritten and story boarded by students in room 8. The students drafted these stories in groups over the last two weeks. We are looking forward to the final published copies as the PKL team will be working hard to get these stories ready over the coming weeks. So watch this space.
It was satisfying to see how quick our students have grasped the skills needed to help them with linking ideas for their Pūtātara project based learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) this year.
Stardome Trip
Also on Tuesday, rooms 2, 3 & 4 visited Star Dome as part of their ‘Our Planet, Our Home-Earth unit focusing on ‘We only have one earth (our taonga), we need to be the guardians of our home. Our tamariki had some good prior knowledge about the planets. So this trip was a valuable connection to their learning at school. Star dome added so much new learning for our young tamariki about how the sun is one big star! Our earth takes 365 days to orbit around the sun. It is one of the eight planets of the solar system and the Milky Way galaxy, and all the planets revolve around the sun in the same direction. Earth is the third planet from the sun.
Duffy Theatre
On Wednesday the Duffy Theatre came to visit CTK. The show ‘Calling Detective Duffy Stat’ was a fun and interactive show where the students engaged in helping Duffy solve a mystery of one of the character’s rugby statistics that seemed to require everyone’s participation. Even Mrs Whyburd was involved in the show!
What is happening over the coming weeks?
Rooms 6 and 8 will have an overnight trip to Arataki from Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June. Arataki (meaning “place of learning” in Māori) and it is located in the Waitakare Rangers, west of Auckland which is approximately a 25 minute drive from Mt Roskill.
Matariki is coming up in three weeks time on Friday 28th June. This day is a public holiday. This year Matariki is celebrated from 29th June to 6th July. Here are a couple of websites that are helpful to explain more about Matariki. Click on the links to find out more. Matariki, Matariki facts, Matariki activities for kids
