Congratulations to all these students on their achievement.

Please remember that all students have a chance to get their name on the Honours Board each term.

It is important that if your child is turning 5 in Terms 2, 3 or 4 that they are enrolled through the office as soon as possible to avoid missing out as due to an increase in enrolments, our Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes are now full.

Thank you to all those families spreading the news around the community about how amazing CTK is.

Kind regards,
Billy Hadnett

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY AND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR 2023

INTRODUCTION TO THE THEME OF THE YEAR 2023
Do good; seek justice (Isaiah 1:17)

Learn to do good
In the Scripture passage chosen for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2023, the prophet Isaiah teaches us how we are to cure these ills. Learning to do right requires the decision to engage in self-reflection. The Week of Prayer is the perfect time for Christians to recognize that the divisions between our churches and confessions cannot be separated from the divisions within the wider human family. Praying together for Christian unity allows us to reflect on what unites us and to commit ourselves to confront oppression and division amongst humanity.

Seek justice
Isaiah counsels Judah to seek justice (v. 17), which is an acknowledgment of the existence of injustice and oppression in their society. He implores the people of Judah to overturn this status quo. Seeking justice requires us to face up to those who inflict evil on others. This is not an easy task and will sometimes lead to conflict, but Jesus assures us that standing up for justice in the face of oppression leads to the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:10). Churches in many parts of the world must acknowledge how they have conformed to societal norms and been silent or actively complicit regarding racial injustice. As Christians we must be willing to disrupt systems of oppression and to advocate for justice.

Curriculum

Term 2 Learning at CTK: Our Value focus for Term 2 is ‘Peace & Joy’.

Term 2 has already been filled with some great learning over the first two weeks of school.
Our trip to the Maritime Museum over two days in week 2 was a success despite the weather conditions. Our tamariki gained some new learning and knowledge about who, what, where, how and why people voyaged to Aotearoa New Zealand hundreds of years ago. These opportunities link really well with our journey of exploring the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories.
Thank you to all our teachers and parents who were able to assist with the learning of our tamariki.

Maths
This term for mathematics our strand focus is on Measurement. Some big ideas for our juniors in measurement are that number strategies can help count, measure and compare non-standard units when measuring objects in a range of contexts.
One big idea our senior students are learning is that units of measurement can be converted e.g. grams to kilograms or kilograms to grams. This also includes using tools like a ruler to measure, convert and compare objects accurately using millimeters and centimeters.

Here is a very useful Ministry of Education website where as a family you can explore Maths together at home. “Maths at Our House”

MOTAT
This week on Wednesday, Room 8 (Year 5&6) had a great rich learning experience at MOTAT. They were learning about how to use the Design Thinking process. This process includes Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test and Implement. Our students were fully engaged and worked together in groups to define issues related to the flooding events this year. They also became experts at exploring and applying new knowledge with using a digital 3D design program, Tinkercad. What a great learning day!

Matariki
Over term 2 we will focus on ‘How does Matariki connect us together?’
In Aotearoa New Zealand, Matariki is a time that celebrates the first rising of the star cluster Pleiades. This will link into our Science focus of Planet Earth and Beyond. Here is a link: Matariki, to learn more information about some of the history of Matariki.

Assessments
Over the next few weeks our teachers will be carrying out testing with your child/children. Testing will include Reading, Writing, Maths, Spelling, Basic Facts and General Knowledge. The data will give our teachers up to date information about the progress of your child/children to inform our reporting to parents. School reports will be available later in the term.
