Principal’s Message

This year our tamariki (children) and kaiako (teachers) have been focussing on our School Value of Service.

This term we have been able to provide environmental Service opportunities for our senior tamariki through planting new native trees at Valonia Reserve and at the Cook Farm in Pukekohe.

At Valonia Reserve, our adopted park, our Yr 5 and 6 tamariki had the chance to plant 50 new native plants to help the environment continue to grow, and huge planting of over 750 native plants and trees at the Cook Farm in Pukekohe this week.

This project is in conjunction with Auckland City Council’s – Trees for Survival Programme. We started in September 2021 during lockdown where our tamariki planted 800 seedlings at school and continued to care for them until the planting this week.

We will have a whole school Service event on Friday 23rd September 9:30am to 11:30am followed by a picnic in the park.

All our tamariki and kaiako will meet at Valonia Reserve for a large clean up through the park.

All parents/caregivers and siblings are welcome to join us on this event.

Special Catholic Character

Feast of St Mary MacKillop

Our school was founded in 1954 by the sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who are often referred to as the ‘brown Joes’ for their distinct habit. Saint Mary MacKillop founded this order, hence the MacKillop sayings that encapsulate our school values.

We celebrated the Feast of St Mary MacKillop on Monday with a whole school Liturgy.

EPro8 Internal Event Challenge

On Wednesday 10th August our Year 5 and 6 students were involved in the EPro8 Internal Event.

This Challenge covers science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The event also involved a range of skills to complete a number of tasks. Skills such as problem solving, reading comprehension, trial and error, perseverance and teamwork.

Our students were put into six groups of 4. Each group had a storage case with construction equipment. There was an option of three challenges the groups had to choose to work through. They had 2 hours to complete as many tasks to gain points. The groups were competing against time and each other.

Each challenge was divided into parts. Each part had a criteria and hints in order to receive points for their group. Points were given if a group completed a part of a challenge and pressed a red button using a chromebook.

Well done to ‘The Incredibles’ group: Xarnder, Fei, Ken F. and Ken P. for winning the Epro8 Internal Challenge for 2022. They will be competing against other primary schools in about two weeks’ time. Well done to all our Room 2 students for participating in this event. All of the students mentioned how the event was very challenging and fun at the same time. Well done Room 2!

Science in a Van

Science in a Van has been facilitating fun and engaging science shows since 2011. Science in a Van provides fun, interactive and memorable ways to see, teach and engage with science – in-person and online. We’re a husband and wife team who live in Tāmaki Makaurau and travel all over Aotearoa (Covid permitting) visiting schools with our unique in-person science shows.
Billy Goats Gruff : A tale of competing forces – The Physical World
  • A classic tale with some new twists! Your juniors will be spellbound as they watch the crafty goats apply their knowledge of forces to move the terrifying troll. By the end of this storytelling your students will be able to use the words ‘force’ and ‘friction’. They will also understand the effect of pulling and pushing a stationary object.

SchoolDocs

Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is live and available to our school community.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team.

Our Board has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.

We invite you to visit the site at https://ctk.schooldocs.co.nz (note that there’s no “www.”).

Our username is “ctk” and password “owairaka“.
