Principal’s Message

“Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring”

St. Catherine of Siena

As we settle back into school life and the continuation of Alert Level 2, it is a quick reminder of how much we have been through in the past 12 months and that nothing should be taken for granted.

With this in mind I have included what Alert Level 2 looks like at CTK.

  • Drop your children at the drop off zone on the Netball Courts.
  • Drop off between 8:00am and 8:45am.
  • No parents are to enter the school grounds unless discussed with Mr Hadnett prior.
  • Hand sanitiser is available in all classrooms as well as hand soap. Both will be used regularly.
  • All students need to be picked up from school by 3:30pm (no exceptions).
  • sKids will be open – Please contact them directly to organise.
  • If children are unwell they need to stay home until well enough to come to school.
  • Any questions please contact Mr Hadnett.

If you have not been recieving updates from Mr Hadnett, please make contact with the office to check your contact details.

Curriculum

This term has, for the most part, been very settled, especially the inclusion of two short weeks with public holidays to start the new learning year. However, who would have thought we would face another short lockdown so early in the year as well. Thankfully, our school community, parents, teachers, learning support and office staff, and students show resilience and work together to keep safe at home and school.

Classes are focusing on ‘AKO’ with questions like “How do we learn?”. Our students are also thinking and discussing about their own identity of where they come from and All about Me.

DMIC (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities)

Late last year, we decided one of our focuses for 2021 is to focus on student outcomes in mathematics. This year our school is starting our learning journey and will be involved in DMIC (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities) research with Massey University. They are interested in learning about how our students’ mathematical understanding and engagement, along with well-being may change over time. There is also a focus on how these impact and relate to classroom teaching. Students will complete the assessment tasks and surveys as part of their normal mathematics classroom work and assessment.

There is an information sheet for parents and caregivers explaining DMIC and their research. In addition, if you do not wish for your child’s mathematics assessment results and survey responses to be shared with the research team and used for the study described in the information sheet, then please complete the Parent and Caregiver ‘OPT OUT’ form. This will be available at the school office.

If you have any questions regarding the Information sheet or the OPT OUT form please do not hesitate to contact Mr Tyrell via email on gtyrell@ctk.school.nz or phone the school office.

Kiwisport

This term during weeks 1 and 2 we have had great participation and focus on active skills with Kiwi Sport. Taekwondo – Kiwisport (Juniors) and Softball – Kiwisport (Seniors).

Learning through Play – Rm 6

Great to see Learning through Play to start the mornings with Room 6. This has been a huge success with our students in Room 6. The level of imagination, vocabulary, fine motor skills, interaction and engagement has been great!

Duffy Theatre

This term we had Duffy Theatre visit our school in week 2. We were the very first school Duffy Theatre visited for 2021! Our school was amazing and they focused and engaged throughout the performance. Duffy Theatre is always a highlight and reminding our students about the importance of reading.
